Why is the Franjo Josip gold ducat the most popular gold coin in Croatia?

The Franjo Josip gold ducat, also known as Franz Jozef or Franc Ios, is the most popular gold coin in Croatia and neighboring countries. Since it is made of gold of very high purity (98,6%), it is also highly valued in the rest of the world. Namely, at the time of the beginning of the production of these coins, the practice was to make gold coins with a lower proportion of gold.

Ducati got its name from Francis Josip, whose image is on one side of the coin. Franz Joseph was the longest-lived Austrian emperor and Hungarian-Croatian king, and he ruled from 1848 to 1916. Embossing the image of an emperor or king on silver or gold coins is a tradition that is thousands of years old. This act guarantees the owner of the money the value and acceptance of the money in the territory under the ruler's control, which facilitates and encourages trade.

The name ducat originated in the Middle Ages, it comes from the Latin word ducalis and means "duke's money". The first gold ducats were made by Venice, and since Venice was known for its merchants who traveled throughout Europe, Venetian ducats spread throughout the continent and became the model for other coins, which also bore the name ducat. Franz Joseph gold ducats were minted from 1852 to 1914, and after a break due to the First World War, the Austrian Mint (Austrian coin) started minting them again in 1920. It is interesting that all editions of this gold coin minted from 1920 until today have the year 1915 stamped on them.

There are two versions of the Franjo Josip ducat - the small or single gold ducat and the large or quadruple gold ducat. Detailed specifications of their size, weight and gold content are given below.

Small gold ducat Franz Jozef

Single ducat Franc Ios it weighs 3,49 grams, of which 98,6%, i.e. 3,44g, is pure gold. Expressed in ounces, this gold coin contains 0,1106 ounces of gold. It has a diameter of 19.75 mm and a thickness of 0.75 mm, which makes it an unusually thin and large gold coin that looks larger than other coins made of a similar amount of precious metal.

On one side there is the image of the Austrian emperor and the inscription "FRANC IOS IDG AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR", where the letters "DG" represent the Latin phrase "Dei Gratia", which means "by the grace of God". The translation of the inscription on the front of the ducat is "Franjo Joseph I, by the grace of God the Austrian Emperor".

On the other side, there is an image of a two-headed imperial eagle holding a sword and an imperial orb with a cross in its claws, and the inscription "HUNGAR BOHEM GAL LOD ILL REX AA 1915". These are the abbreviations of the countries ruled by the emperor, and the full name would be "Hungariae Bohemiae Galiciae Lodomeriae Illyriae Rex Archidux Austriae". Translated from Latin, it means: "King of Hungary, Bohemia, Galicia, Lodomeria, Illyria and Archduke of Austria".

Large gold ducat Franz Jozef

Big or quadruple ducat is 4 times heavier than the small one. Its weight is 13.96 grams, of which 13.77 g, i.e. 0.4424 ounces of pure gold. This means that this gold coin also has a purity of 986/1000. Its diameter is 39.50 mm.

The large ducat has the same inscriptions as the smaller version of this gold coin, but they differ in the embossed images. Namely, on the large version, in addition to the emperor's head, there is also a bust, and below the imperial eagle, the number 4 is stamped in brackets.

In the middle of the 19th century, approximately 100 thousand gold ducats were minted annually, in 1914 almost 380 thousand were minted, and today, due to the increasing demand for investment gold coins, the Münze Österreich produces them in even greater quantities.

The price of gold ducats

Since the gold ducat is made of very high purity gold, it is categorized in the European Union as investment gold. This means that this gold coin can be bought and sold at a price that is very close to the spot price of gold on the world market. Why are ducats the most popular gold coins in Croatia?

In the last hundred years, the history of Croatia, but also of the whole of Europe, has been very turbulent. There have been several wars, several states, political and economic systems have changed, and these changes have always been very painful for the citizens. In the end, the price of all wars and the establishment of new states is paid by small ordinary citizens. As a rule, this happens by printing money without cover, whereby savings of citizens in the national currency loses its value or becomes completely worthless. Since many such situations remain in the nation's collective consciousness, many citizens in search of security decide to buy gold - which many consider the only real money. For thousands of years, gold has been proven to be the best long-term means of preserving value the value of gold is based on its rarity in nature.

When buying gold, it is important to buy it in a form in which it will be possible to sell it easily and at a good price if there is a need to sell it. This is precisely why the Austrian gold ducats of Francis Joseph are popular in our region. Namely, Croatia, like most of the neighboring countries, was part of it Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, which minted the aforementioned coins and released them into circulation. Millions of ducats spread throughout central Europe, so these gold coins are known and appreciated among the inhabitants of those areas. Given the large number of these coins in circulation, gold ducats have a relatively low spread between the buy and sell price, making them a good investment.

In some parts of Croatia, ducats have even become a traditional gift on occasions such as weddings and baptisms, and an ornament on national costumes.

Where to buy ducats?

Many new investors in investment gold decide to buy ducats in jewelry stores, because they think they can only buy them there.
