Numismatics – Gold coins

Although the term numismatics is most often associated exclusively with collecting rare banknotes and coins, it is actually a broader scientific discipline, which deals with the study of old and contemporary coins as objects of historical, cultural and artistic significance. In addition, the study of decorations and medals also falls under numismatics.

Numismatics throughout history

People have always valued rare products that were not easy to come by, and rare coins are no exception. One of the first recorded numismatists was probably the Roman emperor Augustus, who, according to the historian Suetonius from the first century AD, used to show guests his collection of old and exotic coins during festivals and other special occasions. Almost a millennium and a half later, the poet Francesco Petrarca probably owned coins with the image of this same Emperor Augustus, because it is recorded that in 1355 he presented his collection of ancient Roman coins to Charles IV, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. During the Renaissance, many nobles, kings, emperors and popes collected rare and expensive coins, which is why numismatics got the name "royal hobby". During the 19th century, many associations of collectors of rare banknotes and coins were formed, and some of them started publishing magazines on numismatics, which contributed to the spread of interest in this discipline.

Reasons for collecting coins

There are several reasons for collecting notes and coins, but probably the most common reason is to collect as a hobby, with no expectation of profit based on the rise in price of the rare coin and note. People often have some foreign money left over after traveling to other countries, which they decide to keep. But numismatics can be an extremely lucrative activity, and this is precisely the goal of some numismatists. The prices of certain rare denominations can skyrocket and bring their owners a higher yield than they would have by investing in real estate or shares on the stock market. One of the reasons is the willingness of passionate numismatists to pay large sums for one or several coins or bills needed to complete their collections. When it comes to coins made of precious metals, many people buy them based on the expectation of a rise in the price of gold or silver, where the rarity of an individual coin is not important.

Types of numismatists

Since there are probably tens of thousands of different series of coins and bills printed and minted by states and kingdoms throughout history, it is logistically impossible to collect them all. For this reason, numismatists usually focus on a relatively narrow historical period, geographical area or type of coins or banknotes. Many numismatists only collect specimens from their own country, because they are the easiest to reach and are recognized and appreciated by local numismatists. Still others collect the same coin or banknote, but with different years of printing or minting. The third type of numismatist prefers coins or banknotes from all over the world, but it is important that they have a picture of, for example, ships or bridges. There are also those numismatists who only collect coins of an unusual shape (square, with a hole, made of several different metals, etc.). Some numismatists prefer gold coins only.

Gold numismatics

Since many kingdoms and empires preferred gold coin, there are many old gold coins that are highly valued by numismatists. Some of them fetch millions of dollars at auctions. When it comes to modern gold coins, there are several reasons why numismatists love them.

The first reason is the relatively low mintage in which they are minted each year (at least compared to ordinary coins for everyday use). Based on this, they can become extremely rare and valuable within just a few decades.

The second reason is aesthetic beauty. Gold in itself is beautiful to look at, and mints traditionally mint commemorative gold coins with unique embossed images, which will not be used on future series of gold coins. Because of this, collectors have many different gold coins to collect and fill their collections, which gives a special charm to this hobby.

The third reason gold coins are special is the material they are made of. Namely, based on rarities of gold in nature, gold coins will gain in value regardless of the rarity of the individual gold coin. All the gold coins offered by Centar Zlata are categorized as investment gold, and the price of such gold has been growing at an average of 20% per year for the past 7 years. If later there is an increase in demand for that series of gold coins, based on numismatist demand, the value of gold coins can increase many times more. This means that gold numismatics can be an extremely lucrative hobby.
